Google Search Trends February 2023

It is time for us to take another deep dive into the world of search during February 2023.

Sport

One of the biggest sporting events of the month was the boxing match between American social media personality and boxer Jake Paul and UK social media influencer and former Love Island contestant Tommy Fury, which took place at the Diriyah Arena in Saudi Arabia. The match received a 1,700% increase in searches around the time it took place.

Alongside this there were searches for other popular sporting tournaments, with the Six Nations rugby tournament experiencing a 130% increase in combined searches about the tournament and fixtures, as well as the UEFA Champions League and Europa League experiencing  a 250% and 550% increase in searches respectively.

Music, Movies and Showbiz

The biggest music story in February was no doubt the Super Bowl Halftime Show which was headlined by Bajan popstar Rihanna, who experienced a 500% increase in searches at the time of the show. 

Also Bruce Willis had a 400% increase in searches after news broke of he announced he had been sadly diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia.

Finally, popstar Selena Gomez also had an increase in searches due to the latest developments in her alleged feud with Hailey Bieber, the wife of her ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber with a 90% increase in searches.

Also popular was the 2023 comedy horror movie Cocaine Bear which is about bear that goes on a murderous rampage and experienced a 400% increase in searches.

Gaming

There were also two massive releases in the gaming industry. Sons Of The Forest, a PC survival game and sequel to the 2018 game the Forest, experienced a 550% increase in searches. The game has you on a cannibalistic island to try to find a missing billionaire. The second game is Hogwarts: Legacy which had a 200% increase in searches. The game acts as a prequel to the Harry Potter series and though an initial boycotting campaign was attempted over J.K. Rowling’s controversial comments around trans people the game became one of the fastest selling of the year so far in Europe.

Special Days

There were two special days during February that had an increase in searches. The first is of course pancake day with recipes for the day having a 500% increase in searches as people tried something new from the traditional lemon and sugar (the day itself had a 180% increase in searches). The second day was World Book Day 2023 which celebrates reading for all and is most famous for children and teachers dressing up as their favourite book characters and experienced a 250% increase in searches.

News

The major news story which dominated headlines during February was the disappearance of Nicola Bulley who was sadly found drowned three weeks later in Wyre, Lancashire and the story had a 250% increase in searches. Also the disappearance of Madeline McCann from her holiday apartment in Praia De Luz in 2007 had a sudden increase in searches after a Polish woman named Julia Wendell came forward claiming to be her. Though the claim is unproved still the story had another 1,600% increase in searches as it returned to the headlines.
