Google Search Trends March 2022

April 1, 2022Blog

We are finally in April and spring is officially here though you wouldn’t know it with the current cold snap we are having at the time of writing. It is also time for another Google Trends article to see what has been popular in the world of search in the UK this month.

Current Affairs

Of course, one of the biggest events going on right now is the ongoing invasion of Ukraine from Russia with searches for news from the conflict remaining high and growing by 60%. There has also been a 60% increase in searches around the Ukrainian language, probably as a reaction to the government’s refugee sponsorship scheme.

Another news story which had a 50% increase in searches was people ordering lateral flow tests, with the government ending the free supply of them on 1st April.

Entertainment

One of the biggest events of the movie calendar happened in March, the Oscars and of course that now infamous moment Will Smith punch Chris Rock over a joke he made relating to his wife’s ongoing battle with alopecia. Both stars had a massive increase in searches, with 4,850% increase in searches for “Chris Rock” and 3,700% for “Will Smith Chris Rock”.

A breakout search has also occurred for Taylor Hawkins, the drummer in the Foo Fighters, who passed away earlier this month after experiencing chest pains at the Casa Medina hotel in Bogotá, Colombia whilst on tour with his band there.

In terms of new releases, there have been two which have been very popular – the new Batman movie starring Robert Pattinson in the role had a 250% increase in searches. Also the new Elden Ring video game, an RPG that has had a 350% increase in searches.

Also popular has been the introduction of online quiz games such as Heardle and Wordle. Heardle being a game where players guess a song by listening to its introduction which has been a breakout search.

Meanwhile Wordle is a daily word game created by Welsh software engineer Josh Wardle and has been published on The New York Times website since 2022. The aim of the game is for players to guess a five-letter word in six tries, with each guess the player is told if they have a letter in the right place, a letter in the word but in the wrong place or a letter which doesn’t feature in the word. The game has had a 190% increase in searches for “wordle” and “wordle today”

Sport

In the world of sport one of the biggest news stories was the passing of Australian cricketer Shane Warne, who died aged 52 of a suspected heart attack bought on by extreme dieting.

Staying with cricket, the England vs West Indies cricket match was also very popular with a 650% increase in searches.

Also popular in sport has been the formula 1 championship with races taking place in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia with Formula 1 having a 300% increase in searches.

There has also been a series of large horse racing events this month, with the Cheltenham Festival which has led to a 40% increase in searches. No doubt this will continue in April with the Grand National occurring over Easter.
