We are already at the end of April and Spring is now fully upon us and it is time for another Google Trends article, where we take a deep dive into what is trending in the world of search in the UK.
Tech
In one of the big tech stories of the month, billionaire Tesla owner Elon Musk purchased Twitter in a $44bn deal. He has said he wished to purchase it as it is one of the few social media sites where free speech is allowed – calling it the online “Town Square” in interviews.
Showbiz
One of the biggest showbiz stories right now has been the Johnny Depp vs Amber Heard civil trial, with Depp suing Heard for defamation of character over an article she wrote which alleged he was abusive towards her. Heard is in turn countersuing for him calling her a liar. The trial has been played out live on US TV with every twist and turn being documented around the world so it is no surprise Johnny Depp and Amber Heard have had a 1,500% and 3,650% increase in searches respectively.
There was also a few new movie and TV series which enjoyed an increase in searches. Netflix series Anatomy of a Scandal had a 2,150% increase in searches along with the second series of Bridgerton which had a 100% increase in searches, whilst teen sitcom Derry Girls had a 400% increase in searches. There was also a 140% increase in searches for Death on the Nile, a film adaptation of the Agatha Christie novel, whilst Sony’s Spiderverse also had a new entry with the release of Morbius, which had a 190% increase in searches, despite the films mixed reviews.
There was also the sad news of the passing of The Wanted singer Tom Parker, who died from a brain tumour at the age of just 33. His name had a 400% increase in searches with the band set to re-record a version of their single Gold Forever to raise money for The Brain Tumour Charity since his passing.
Sport
There has been quite a few sporting events that have taken place during April.
The FA Cup semi finals have played off with the final taking place on the 14th May and two of the biggest teams in the Premier League, Man City vs Liverpool were against each other in one semi-final, with the match having a 1,350% increase in searches.
There was also in boxing the epic match between Tyson Fury and Dillian Whyte which Fury won with a knockout to retain his WBC Heavyweight Title and the champion boxer had a 550% increase in searches.
In the world of horse racing, the UK’s most famous horse race, the Grand National, also took place for the first time in front of a crowd since before the pandemic. Noble Yeats, ridden by amateur jockey Sam Waley‑Cohen won in what was set to be his final race as a jockey before retiring. The phrases grand national and grand national 2022 had a 1,500% increase and 1,450% increase in searches respectively.
Anniversaries
Sơn đoòng cave in Vietnam had a 3,560% increase in searches, following it’s use as a Google Doodle. The cave was discovered 13 years ago within VIetnam’s Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park and is the world’s largest cave, with its own animals and eco systems.
