Google Search Trends May 2022

Now that we have reached the end of May, it is time for another Google Trends article. We will be looking into the topics that have received a large/increased number of searches in the UK.
Movies and TV Shows
There have been a number of movies and TV Shows that have popped up on Google Trends this month. Stranger Things have had an 850% increase in searches due to the fourth season recently releasing on May 27th 2022. The series has already received positive reviews from sites such as IMDB and The Guardian. Top Gun has also received an increase in searches (+900%) this month since releasing their sequel movie ‘Top Gun Maverick’ on the 27th May 2022, starring Tom Cruise. Love Island has made an appearance with a 750% increase in google searches this month because of their newest season starting on the first week of June. Love Island is a popular summer time dating show which airs at the start of summer every year – except last year’s winter season due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Current affairs
Monkey pox has had a 4,650% increase in searches since the news of the current outbreak in the UK which is believed to have come from travellers from Nigeria. Monkey pox is a mild disease that generally gets better by itself, it can cause a skin rash that resembles closely to chickenpox and can occur when a person has been in contact with someone or something contaminated with the virus. There has been a total of around 190 cases reported in the UK so far.
Johnny Depp has had a 100% increase in google searches since it reached the end of his seven-week defamation trial against Amber Heard. Depp achieved a victory in the trial by the juror vote and was rewarded with 15 million dollars in damages from Amber Heard. Depp had sued Heard for 50 million dollars and Heard then countersued for 100 million dollars.
Events
Platinum Jubilee received a search increase of 400% with Her Majesty the Queen becoming the first monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee after 70 years of service. Due to this celebration, there became a four-day weekend that consisted of two bank holidays on the 2nd and 3rd of June.
Another event that had a big increase in searches was the Eurovision Song Contest. The song contest was on the 10th – 14th May 2022 with Ukraine being crowned the winners after Stefania by Kalush Orchestra finished first and the UK following as the runners up with second place.
Sport
Liverpool v Madrid had a 1,450% increase in searches this month as it was the UEFA Championship game on the 28th May. The day started off negatively as kick off was delayed 35 minutes after the scheduled time due build-up of fans causing chaos outside of the stadium but Madrid secured the championship title after they beat Liverpool with a 1-0 score.
