From January, websites displayed using the Google Chrome web browser which contain either a password or credit card form will be marked as ‘not secure’ unless equipped with an SSL (Secure Socket Layer) Certificate.
With so many high-profile Internet security breaches recently, the web is moving more and more towards extra measures to protect sensitive data. Google says it plans to carry this through for all sites without an SSL.
Not having an SSL will affect a website’s Google rankings
From January, Google will begin ranking websites higher in search results if they have an SSL Certificate installed (signified by a small padlock icon in the browser address bar).
For companies reliant on any form of online marketing, this is of paramount importance:
- Not having SSL certification will mean a website will lose its position on Google Search;
- As Google has around 90% of the UK market, this could prove disastrous for businesses relying on SEO or Pay Per Click marketing.
